How to say “we’re not doing gifts this year”

“We’re not doing gifts this year”… imagine having the confidence to say that!

After years of list making, researching, spreadsheets, phone calls and messages between family and friends trying to work out what long lost relatives would like for Christmas, this could be the year that it could finally change.

If your gut is telling you that gift buying isn’t necessary in your family or friendship circle it’s probably time to call it a day. The impact of this social movement could protect you both mentally and financially for years to come. We’ve come up with conversation starters to get you out of the present buying rut, you can thank us later.

“Let’s do brunch”

Instead of giving material items, get together with friends and spend time together

“Let’s donate to a food bank”

Times are tough for so many out there, instead of buying presents, donate instead

“Let’s do Secret Santa”

If you’re in a group, suggest a low value secret santa

“I want to be more sustainable”

Overconsumption is rife at Christmas time

Reminder: gifting does not increase your value as a parent, partner, sibling friend.

You never know, making the first move in a family or friends group WhatsApp you may feel people were feeling the same way all along and even if they don’t feel the same way, you can graciously back out of the gift giving merry go round and let them continue… no dramas.
