Have you ever heard the phrase ‘Comparison is the thief of joy’? The concept of comparing yourself to others can really suck the enjoyment out of life, and we completely agree, especially when it comes to life and money goals.
We recently opened up a Q&A on the Financielle Instagram account and there was a common theme.
“Feeling overwhelmed. How do you afford a house, wedding & kids? I’m 27 and haven’t done any.”
Great question.
Here’s what our resident finance expert Laura Pomfret said:
Maths is maths
There’s no cheating the system, and what may seem like simple life stages for previous generations are incredibly expensive stages nowadays. It’s a fact that wages haven’t risen in line with the cost of living. Whether we like it or not, hitting our money goals will probably take much longer than it did for our parents.
Manage your money well
Managing your money well, living on less than you make, saving or investing the difference, and staying away from consumer debt will definitely help. Budgeting is a really good way to manage the process, and it doesn’t mean going uber frugal. It means giving your money a job and getting intentional about hitting your money goals.
Prioritise
As the saying goes, you can’t have it all at once. But you can decide what you’d like to achieve in what order. Take some time to reflect on what’s important to you and your life, not what looks good on other people.
Personalise
Bring your money goals to life. Personalise them, make them aesthetic, gamify them, share them with family and friends, document them on social media to stay accountable – whatever it takes to get you engaged and motivated.
You can personalise and track your money goals for free in the Financielle app.
Ignore the noise
Most importantly, ignore the noise. We’re all on our own journey. Whilst you may not own a home or be getting married this year, you can determine whether you’re living a life you love.
