How to Reflect on Your Year in Money

The end of the year always comes with that pause and breathe moment. Work winds down, life slows a little, and suddenly we’ve got space to look back at how the year actually went, both financially and emotionally.

This isn’t about beating yourself up for what didn’t go perfectly. It’s about noticing what did happen, celebrating progress, and using that insight to set yourself up for a calmer, stronger 2026.

Here’s how to look back at your money year in a way that feels grounding, not scary.

Start with what happened, not how you felt

Open your banking apps, skim your statements, check your previous budgets, look at your sinking funds. Gather the facts first before attaching emotion to them.

Ask yourself:

  • What came in?
  • What went out?
  • Did savings grow?
  • Did debt shrink?
  • Where was money disappearing without me noticing?

Spot your quiet wins (we promise there are more than you think)

Maybe you tracked your spending for the first time.
Maybe you built your emergency fund.
Maybe you finally cancelled that subscription you forgot existed.
Maybe you didn’t hit every goal, but you showed up for yourself.

Write down 5 money wins from the year, even the tiny ones. Those are the moments that compound.

Then gently look at what felt hard

What stressed you out financially this year?
Where did you overspend?
What habits kept popping up?

This isn’t about shame. It’s information. The goal is to understand, not punish yourself.

Check the system, not your character

Most people don’t fail because they’re “bad with money”. The system they’re using just isn’t working for their life.

Maybe your budget was too tight.
Maybe you didn’t automate as much as you meant to.
Maybe you needed sinking funds earlier in the year.

What needs adjusting so next year feels easier?

Let your reflection guide your next step

After looking back, ask yourself:

How do I want money to feel in 2026?

  • Calm?
  • Controlled?
  • Consistent?
  • Fun?
  • Less stressful?
  • More intentional?

Once you know the feeling, the routines and goals fall into place.

Ready to go deeper? Laura just covered this inside The Vault Unlocked

If reflecting on your year brought up a few lightbulb moments (or an ick when opening your statements), this week’s Unlocked episode is for you.

Laura talks about:

  • Why we avoid looking at our spending
  • The illusion of a “fresh start”
  • The patterns we only notice when we zoom out
  • Her own reflections from this year (food shops, savings dips, the works)

It’s gentle. It’s honest. It’s exactly what you need before stepping into a new money season.
